Our church puts on Trunk or Treat in the parking lot each year the Wednesday before Halloween, and this year we dressed up the kids and decided to head out. We had left Alexis’ costume lying around the house for a couple of weeks, just so she could see it and so we could talk it up to her. When the time came to put it on, we got a “no!” about putting it on. So, we dressed Noah first, hoping it would create some peer pressure for Alexis. When she saw Noah she agreed to let us put it on her, but when it came time to put on the top, that’s when all the cooperation stopped! She just didn’t like the idea (it didn’t help it was 89 degrees outside). Finally Daddy decided to bribe her with some candy to get her to put it on. That worked…at first. I got a few pictures, then she was just done and wanted to take it off. We thought maybe once we got there she’d see all the other kids in their costumes and want to wear hers.
We got everyone loaded up and headed out to meet Meemaw, Papaw, and Aunt Sam. Alexis took one look at what was going down and pretty well shut down. No wearing the costume, no smiling, no fun at all! We convinced her to sit in the stroller, hold her trick or treat bag and have Papaw push her to each car. She wouldn’t take any candy herself, just hold the bag and let other people put candy in it! My girl is just like me – painfully shy at times, and completely stubborn once her mind is made up. I hope she comes out of her shell a bit before she gets too much older – I remember life being hard when the time to be social came around. I don’t want the same thing for her.
Noah did great, he was very happy to be held and walked around and kissed and cuddled. We’ll keep trying with Alexis, until she gets old enough to decide for herself!
